Frank DePaulo lives in Eastern Pennsylvania with his wife Judy and his two daughters, Olivia and Victoria.

Having dogs most of my life, I established Tahari Kennels in 1979, shortly after acquiring my first Rhodesian Ridgeback. Since that time I have bred well over 50 Ridgeback champions that carry the Tahari prefix. I have been very active in the Ridgeback Club of the United States, holding various positions including Board of Directors, Vice President and two terms as President.

In 1993 we acquired our first Pointers from long time friend and breeder Michael Zollo. Since then we have bred or owned over 30 champions including Number one ranked, Best in Show, National Specialty and multiple Top Ten winners. Our first pointer was multiple Best in Show Ch. Albelarm’s Bee Serious. Elliott, along with 24 Best in Show wins, was the number one Pointer, the top pointer dog of all time and is currently the number 2 producer in breed history, with over 90 champions to date. PAGE 5

I have a very diverse background in dogs when it comes to the breeds that I have experience with. In addition to Rhodesian Ridgebacks, I have owned or been involved in, Dobermans, Australian Cattle Dogs, German Wirehaired Pointers and Greyhounds. Currently we are breeding both Pointers and Whippets, along with Ridgebacks.

In 2003 I was approved to judge Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Pointers. I am currently working on filling both groups.

I am honored to be selected, and look forward to judging the 2006 National Specialty, and would like to thank the RRCUS and it’s members for allowing me to do so.

Puppy and Veterans Sweepstake

TROPACO RIDGEBACKS

Rhodesian Ridgebacks have been part of my family since 1967, when my father acquired our first ridgeback, Tika. He was inspired by my step-mother, who had read the books of Lawrence Van Der Post – stories from his life in Africa included these wonderful dogs.

My first show ridgeback was Tigre, CH. Ketaru’s Tropaco Tigre ROM, who came to me in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1989. Bred by Mershon Beach and Dudley Hackney, she was a wonderful companion. Most fortunately for me, she also turned out to be a great foundation bitch, producing eleven champions. I bred my first litter in 1991, under my kennel name Tropaco. From that litter I showed and finished my first home-bred champion, CH. Tropaco Warlord’s Ruffian, "Roxy". She is 15 years old now and is snoring peacefully in the living room as I write this! Two others finished their championship out of that litter. Since that time, I’ve handled over thirty dogs to their championships, mostly those of my own breeding or sired by my males, but occasionally for friends as well. I have also participated in lure coursing and agility.

I have been a member of RRCUS for over a dozen years, and have been an active member and held various officer positions on the board of the San Diego Rhodesian Ridgeback Club for the past ten years, during which time the club became licensed by the AKC as a regional specialty club.

My perspective on evaluating Rhodesian Ridgebacks in my own breeding program begins, of course, with comparing the dog to the AKC standard. Of great importance to me is even and balanced movement and strong breed type. Of paramount importance to me is good temperament, and I have worked hard to prioritize this in my breeding program.

As a breeder, owner and handler, I am excited to have an opportunity to evaluate the up-and-coming puppies and juniors of our breed. It will similarly be a pleasure to judge the veterans of our breed, who always hold a special place in everyone’s heart, including mine.

Mrs. Connie Simmonds and her husband started with their first show Dachshund in 1970 and bred their first litter in 1973 under the kennel name of Simdac. She showed a great male from her first litter and learned a lot about what it takes to compete in the dog show world. The Simmonds got another show bitch in 1970. She and her husband have finished 18 champions. An AKC licensed judge since 1999, she is approved for Dachshunds and Junior Showmanship. Mrs. Simmonds is a board member of the Mount Ogden Kennel Club and that club’s AKC delegate. She is always in demand to judge at AKC shows and local matches.

I first got interested with hounds as a boy over 50 years in the UK Fox Hounds and Fell Hounds were my first breeds, It was not until the late 60s whilst serving in the military in Southern Africa that I became involved with Ridgeback, In those days we used them for hunting and as companions.

At the present moment in time I have ridgebacks from American, Africa, and British bloodline, all of which I have exhibited to their championships myself .

Over the years I have had the honor to judge Ridgebacks at a number of International Shows throughout the world thus giving me a worldwide view of our breed from the show ring.

I got my start in Ridgebacks in February of 1988 when Cheri and I attended the Golden Gate Kennel Club show at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. There we had our first close contact with Ridgebacks and met Ralph and Shirley Batson. Within a few weeks we purchased our foundation bitch from the Batsons, Ch Deer Ridge Morganna, ROM. From that time on, I have devoted a good portion of my time to the breed, as an exhibitor, a breeder, and an officer of RRCUS.

I have been involved in the sport of dogs since 1990 and have shown several breeds. By late 1990, I had found my passion for the Ridgeback and it continues to grow to this day. Since this time, I have shown and championed several Ridgebacks, and have owned, co-owned and co-bred since1994.

My name is perhaps most synonymous with The Ridgeback Register, celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2005. As its founder and sole owner, I consider the magazine a true labor of love, and the knowledge I have gained while producing it is immeasurable: With every photo I look at, every breeder I interview and every issue I print, I further educate myself on our wonderful breed.

Since we are all perpetual students of the breed, regardless of how many years of experience we have, I regularly attend Ridgeback- and breed-specific seminars, including, most recently, Pat Hastings' world-renowned workshop. I believe that in all facets of life, there is always room for growth.

I am the co-creator, with Alicia Mohr-Hanna, of "The Standard's Image - The Form and Function of The Rhodesian Ridgeback." This seminar, which will soon be a published book, has been presented at the Westminster Kennel Club, two RRCUS National Specialties, two Ridgeback World Congresses and to several all-breed clubs.

I have had the honor of judging supported sweepstakes at the Long Island Kennel Club in New York, the Greeley Kennel Club in Colorado, and the first annual Bay Area Rhodesian Ridgeback Club Regional Specialty in California, and will be judging several sweepstakes in
2006.

I believe judging is the art of finding balance - something I do every day in my work as a graphic designer and photographer. I am honored to be one of the Best Ridge judges at this year’s National.

COURSING JUDGE

I have been involved in coursing for over 20 years now. In 1979 I when to my first lure trial and fell in love with coursing and whippets and 1981 I got my first whippet. I went to several coursing events both in the US and in Canada. I have been a licensed ASFA judge since 1987 and an AKC judge since 1991.

Since then, I have bred for the dual-purpose whippets. I have bred dogs that have been successful in the ring both show and obedience and on the coursing field. I believe that one can be successful in the ring and in the field. One dog can do it with conformational soundness and athletic ability in the field.

I am very honored to be here judging. I applaud all of you for your participation here at your national specialty. I want to wish all exhibitors the best of luck. And most of all, have fun! You are all winners!

LEE OPRESKO

Although I was a dog lover from an early age, I did not have the opportunity to own a sighthound until 1984 when I purchased my first Basenji - a dog I had been interested in since seeing the movie Goodbye My Lady when I was young.

Being new to the world of purebred dogs, I had never heard of lure coursing when we acquired Eddie, Savvy and Venus our first Basenji's. We lived in SLC at the time and there wasn't a club or organization, so we became founding members of the Utah Sighthound Racing and Coursing Club. The early years of the club saw a heavy emphasis on Whippet activities. It was during this time we acquired our first whippet, Rocky. My husband and I participated as general helpers all the while working to have the club begin lure coursing so that all breeds could participate. This took several more years and the help of a number of people but finally did come to pass.

After participating in lure coursing for a number of years I decided to obtain a judges license. A task that proved quite difficult living in Utah. After many trips to Colorado and Idaho I had finally judged enough dogs to get an all breed judge's license. I have judged around the country and in Canada since becoming an all breed judge. Initially, I was only involved in ASFA but have since judged both AKC and ASFA events. I find I really enjoy the opportunity of watching the dogs run and over the years have had the opportunity to judge a number of breed nationals.

I currently own three dogs. Rocky the whippet is over 14 years old and still going strong. Two are Basenji's - Jake and Zoe. Jake and Zoe are both dogs who have been rehomed with me after their initial homes proved to not be Basenji savvy. Zoe has only been with me for a couple of months and will be tested on the coursing field as soon as she has settled in to her new home.

I find Ridgebacks are creative coursers who are fun to watch and a challenge to score especially since they are so creative and tend to hunt as a pack. I am looking forward to judging your nationals and feel honored that I will have the opportunity of seeing so many great Ridgebacks chase the 'bunny'.
